Kansas City Royals
Kauffman Stadium has been home to the Kansas City Royals since opening in 1973 as Royals Stadium, seating 37,903 on Kentucky bluegrass. Renamed July 2, 1993, to honor franchise founder Ewing Kauffman, the open-air, baseball-only park was designed by Kivett and Myers. Its 322-foot Water Spectacular fountain is the largest privately funded fountain in the world. The stadium hosted the MLB All-Star Game in 1973 and 2012, and Royals home games in the 1980, 1985, 2014, and 2015 World Series.
The Royals needed a dedicated baseball venue separate from the multi-use parks of the era. Kansas City built Kauffman Stadium alongside Arrowhead Stadium to create a shared sports complex with modern amenities.
The lower bowl behind home plate offers the best overall views. Outfield sections near the fountains provide a classic Kauffman Stadium backdrop.
Huge surface lots make parking straightforward, but traffic backs up near first pitch. Arrive early if you want to tailgate; the complex is built for it.
Walk the outfield concourse to see the fountains and crown scoreboard. The Royals Hall of Fame and the outfield plaza are must-see stops.
