Morgan State Bears
Hughes Stadium, opened in 1937, is one of the most historic venues in HBCU football. Named after William Alfred Carroll Hughes Sr., the 1897 Morgan alumnus who introduced football to the institution, the stadium has been home to legendary coaches Eddie Hurt and Earl Banks, who built a dynasty that claimed 19 conference championships and produced four NFL Hall of Famers.
The stadium was built in 1937 for $360,000 to provide Morgan State (then Morgan College) with a proper home venue worthy of its growing football program, which began in 1898. At the time, it was considered one of the preeminent facilities in all of black college football, establishing Morgan as a powerhouse institution.
The main grandstand on the west side offers excellent views of the action and shade during afternoon games. Premium seating near midfield provides the best sightlines. The student section brings tremendous energy, especially during rivalry games.
Campus parking lots fill up 2-3 hours before kickoff. Parking is available in designated lots along Hillen Road and Coldspring Lane. Street parking in surrounding neighborhoods is an option but arrives early for the best spots.
Tailgating in the campus lots is a beloved tradition. The Morgan State marching band delivers outstanding pre-game and halftime shows. The atmosphere is especially electric for homecoming and rivalry matchups. Northeast Baltimore restaurants and bars fill with Bears fans before and after games.
