Johnny Unitas Stadium, named after the NFL Hall of Famer and Baltimore Colts legend, underwent a transformative $32 million renovation from 1999-2002. Originally Towson Stadium (1978) and later Minnegan Stadium (1983), the 11,198-seat facility honors Unitas, who died just days after ceremonies commemorating the stadium's 2002 reopening.
The original stadium was built in 1978 with 5,000 capacity to support Towson's football program, which had been established in 1969 under coach and athletic director "Doc" Minnegan.
The 2002 renovation added 6,000 seats and a four-tier press box, providing excellent sightlines throughout the modern facility. The field house and entry-level plaza enhance the gameday experience.
Located in Towson, just north of Baltimore, with easy access from I-695. Campus parking available. Downtown Towson is within walking distance with restaurants and shops.
The stadium honors Baltimore Colts legend Johnny Unitas, creating a connection between college football and NFL history. Towson's campus location in a vibrant college town provides great pre and post-game options.
