Oliver C. Dawson Stadium is a 22,000-seat multi-purpose facility in Orangeburg, South Carolina, home to one of the most storied programs in HBCU football history. Named after legendary athletic director and coach Oliver C. Dawson, the stadium has witnessed South Carolina State's 16 MEAC titles, four Black National Championships, and the development of 130+ NFL players including four Hall of Famers.
The stadium opened in 1955 as State College Stadium to provide South Carolina State (founded 1896) with a proper home venue for its football program, which traces its roots to 1907. The facility enabled SCSU to host larger crowds and establish itself as a powerhouse in HBCU athletics.
The main grandstand offers excellent sightlines with premium seating at midfield. The student section behind the band creates an energetic atmosphere that defines SCSU gameday. East side seating provides afternoon shade. The 22,000 capacity ensures good views throughout the stadium.
Campus parking lots surrounding the stadium are the primary option. Arrive 2-3 hours early for homecoming and rivalry games. Free parking is generally available with short walks to the stadium. The Orangeburg location makes parking straightforward compared to urban venues.
SCSU gameday is a community celebration with Bulldogs fans traveling from across South Carolina. The Marching 101 band delivers powerful performances. Tailgating in campus lots starts 3-4 hours before kickoff. Homecoming week is the pinnacle of the season with events throughout Orangeburg. The "Bulldog Tenacity" motto resonates through the stadium.
