Marshall
Joan C. Edwards Stadium opened in 1991 on Marshall University's campus in Huntington, West Virginia, replacing the condemned off-campus Fairfield Stadium. Home to the Marshall Thundering Herd, it holds 30,475 on an AstroTurf surface. Originally named Marshall University Stadium, it was renamed in November 2003 after Joan C. Edwards and her late husband James F. Edwards, whose combined donations exceeded $65 million. A bronze memorial to the 75 victims of the 1970 plane crash stands at the stadium entrance.
Built to replace deteriorating Fairfield Stadium. Opened September 7, 1991 vs New Hampshire. Named for Joan C. Edwardsβone of two NCAA D1 stadiums named exclusively for a woman.
U-shaped design offers good sightlines. Expandable to 55,000 seats.
Campus parking available. Downtown Huntington is walkable.
Memorial to 1970 crash is moving tribute. Marshall is 151-30 at home since 1991. "We Are Marshall" immortalized the story.
