Western Carolina Catamounts
Bob Waters Field at E.J. Whitmire Stadium opened in 1974, replacing Memorial Stadium and providing Western Carolina with a modern 13,742-seat facility in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Cullowhee. Named for the university trustee who drove WCU's expansion and the coach who led the Catamounts to the 1983 I-AA national championship game, the stadium is undergoing a $37 million renovation to upgrade the west side stands by the 2026 season.
Completed in 1974 at an initial cost of $1.66 million granted by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1971. The new facility replaced Memorial Stadium and included construction of the Jordan-Phillips Field House to support WCU's growing football program.
The east side stands currently offer the best views. The west side renovation will add premium seating by 2026. The mountain setting provides a stunning backdrop from upper sections.
Campus lots accessible from HWY 107. Limited parking in remote Cullowhee location - arrive 2-3 hours early. Overflow parking uses shuttle service from outlying lots.
The Blue Ridge Mountain setting makes this one of the most scenic FCS venues. The remote location (Cullowhee has fewer than 1,000 residents outside the university) creates an intimate mountain football atmosphere. Explore nearby Sylva for dining and lodging options.
