Rice
Rice Stadium opened September 30, 1950, on the Rice University campus in Houston, Texas. Originally seating 70,000 β the second-largest stadium in the Southwest Conference at opening β it now holds 47,000. The open-air bowl sits partially below ground, features no running track, and has inward-angled upper decks for improved sightlines. Notable events include President Kennedy's 1962 "We choose to go to the Moon" address and Super Bowl VIII in January 1974. The playing surface is AstroTurf 3D60H Synthetic Turf.
Built in 1950 to replace Rice Field. Walter P Moore's first sports project was completed in just nine months using 24-hour shifts. The design eliminated the running track to bring fans closer to the action.
Excellent sightlines throughout due to no-track design. West side has shade in afternoon games. 70 arches frame the bowl.
Rice campus lots available. Street parking in West University neighborhood. Light rail stops nearby.
Walk the beautiful Rice campus before games. The stadium offers ocean-like openness rare for football venues. Historic architecture throughout.
