The second-oldest public university in Texas (founded 1876 on the former Alta Vista Plantation) and the oldest publicly funded HBCU in Texas, its historic core features six National Register of Historic Places buildings — including the 1925 Alfred N. Poindexter Veterinary Hospital (designed by PVAMU alumnus and celebrated African American architect Louis E. Fry), Annie Laurie Evans Hall, and W.R. Banks Library.

💡 Park on the east side of campus and walk the historic core between the W.R. Banks Library and Anderson Hall; the university is a public campus open to pedestrian visitors during daylight hours.

Housed in a former store and post office in Brookshire, this small county museum preserves artifacts, photographs, and records documenting early settler life, the railroad era, and agriculture in Waller County.

Waller County's $44 million, four-story courthouse opened November 2025 on the original courthouse square; the exterior plaza on the southwest corner preserves the restored Seth Thomas clock and the 1,000-pound bell salvaged from the demolished 1894 Victorian-era courthouse, making it a distinctive piece of living civic heritage in the county seat of Hempstead.

💡 The clock-tower plaza on the southwest corner of the grounds is the main draw for visitors; the building is a working courthouse so interior access follows normal business hours on weekdays.
